The ace director turns 43
When we speak of South Indian cinema, one of the directors who names comes to mind is Gautham Vasudev Menon. This ace director needs no introduction, as he has made a massive impact on Kollywood and in Tollywood too in the recent years. Now, that the innovative veteran turns an year older, BollywoodLife brings to you 5 of his most iconic movies till date…
Minnale
This gem was Gautham’s second movie and is one of the favourites of romance fans. It is the tale of Rajesh, played by Madhavan, who falls for Reena, played by Reema Sen. But sadly, the girl is fixed to be married to someone else. So Rajesh lies to her that he is the groom and tries to win her over. This movie is iconic for its playfulness, romance, a torrent of heartbreaking emotions, a little youthful rivalry and the most amazing songs of course. Minnale is certainly a movie which can be watched years from now and still be enjoyed.
Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu
The 2006 Kamal starrer was a path breaker for the star, actress Jyothika, crime thrillers and cinema as a whole. Raghavan, played by the Ulaganayagan, is a veteran cop who is investigating a series of brutal murders that brings him to New York. He meets Aradhana, played by Jyothika and the two start an akward romance, each facing their own inner demons. Soon, Raghavan realizes that he is facing sadistic serial killers who will stop at nothing to escape from the cops. This movie is remembered for the Hollywood like treatment of the film and a memorable performance from Kamal sir of course.
Vaaranam Aayiram
This movie is my personal favourite. It covers a lot of important things in a man’s life like coming of age, love, loss,a dark phase, self discovery and the special bond that every father and son share. All these events happens to a man called Suriya, which is played by actor Suriya and how his father Krishnan, also played by Suriya, supports him all the way to the very end. The macho Kollywood hunk captured the hearts of millions with his spellbinding performance in a double role of father and son. Not to forget, Rahman’s magic touch pervades throughout the movie making it a youth favourite.
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa
Gautam Menon’s romantic drama Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is a personification of complicated romantic relationships. Believe me, this one has captured the hearts and souls of many scorned and frustrated lovers around the country. The love story of Karthik, played by Simbu and Jessie, played by Trisha, is not an ordinary one. What makes VTV special is the realistic and matter of fact treatment of one of the most abstract emotions in the world, love. Other than that, the one of the kind chemistry between the two leads and Rahman’s soulful music makes this movie truly iconic. And a little fun fact: VTV is still considered STR’s best performance as an actor till date.
Yennai Arindhaal

Here is another cool cop movie, which becomes even better when it stars Thala Ajith Kumar. It is a story of a cop Sathyadev, played by Ajith and his encounters with criminals in general, and one criminal in particular called Victor, played by Arun Vijay, and how it affects his personal and professional life. Again, instead of overpraising heroes like it happens in most movies, the character of Sathyadev is focused, cool, practical and is human, that is, he loses a few battles and wins others. Another aspect which made Yennai Arindhaal special is that we get to see Ajith not only as a badass cop, but also as a caring, loving step father to a little girl. Plus, Arun Vijay is exceptional as the baddie which makes the face off between Sathyadev and Victor exciting.
So that concludes our list. If you feel any other movie of the ace director deserves to be here, then let us know in the comments below.
