The film is quite complicated and messy
Mahesh Babu’s latest offering for his fans is the coming of age family drama Brahmotsavam. We say coming of age and family drama because this film is both, and a whole lot more. If you think it will be a simple family centred film, then you will be somewhat right, but not quite. Confused? Maybe the plot will help you clear your mind…
What’s it about
Brahmotsavam is a story of a family and one member of the family in particular. That person is Mahesh Babu’s character. Curiously, most of the characters in the film don’t have a name, Mahesh being one of them. He is a son of a wealthy paint businessman who has made an empire out of nothing. His father, played by Sathyaraj, has a confidante and a brother of sorts who handles everything for him, played by Rao Ramesh. Ramesh was always jealous of the status, wealth and respect Sathyaraj held and wanted the same for himself. Also, he is anxious to get his daughter Pranitha Subhash married to Mahesh.
But Kajal Aggarwal’s character, who lives in Australia comes to visit India for a few months. She is the daughter of a friend of Sathyaraj. So Mahesh and Kajal meet and sparks fly from the first moment. As their romance develops rapidly, the entire family including Ramesh and Sathyaraj head out for a vacation. On this trip, Mahesh kisses Kajal by a lake, but Ramesh unfortunately witnesses it. What follows is a huge quarrel where Ramesh spits out all the hate he has harboured for Sathyaraj all these years. After the quarrel and split, Sathyaraj dies of sheer heartbreak.
As Mahesh and his mother, played by Revathi are grieving their loss, a friend of Mahesh’s sister enters their lives, played by Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Samantha lifts up Mahesh’s spirits slowly and two bond really well. Here is when the two embark on a crazy roadtrip to find meaning for the final cryptic words of Mahesh’s late father. The two journey across the length and breadth of the country trying to track Mahesh’s distant relatives of up to seven generations.
The rest of the tale is about what the two find on this adventure and if Mahesh succeeds in patching things up with his estranged father’s friend Ramesh.
What’s hot
The best part about Brahmotsavam is Mahesh Babu himself. Be it when he is the life of the party, or when he is sulking and thinking in a corner, it is hard to keep your eyes away from him. Not only was he charming, his expressions and dialogue delivery during the most emotional scenes was also perfect. His character is someone many people can relate to, strong, resilient; happy but when it comes to showing true feelings, a little hesitant. Not just he, the entire cast was excellent too. Sathyaraj rocks as Mahesh’s father, a man of patience and respect, compared almost to lord ram. Ramesh is also good as the constantly worrying uncle. Kajal is really hot and played a very bold and naughty character, contrary to what she has done before. Samantha is also pretty enjoyable, but a little annoying at times. Also, one of the biggest plus points of Brahmotsavam is the cinematography.
The visuals were simply out of this world. Overall, these are the few things that saved the film a bit.
What’s not
Did you read the plot? Wasn’t it a little confusing? If you found that confusing then wait till you watch the film. The screenplay of Brahmotsavam is simply atrocious. The non linearity of the story is enough to get anyone irritated. The first half is a family drama; the second half becomes a crazy road trip journey with almost no common points of contact. It’s like watching two different films, one in first half and one in second. There are some points where it is really difficult to make head or tails of the situation and dialogues, which are very random at times. Also, the whole concept of family coming together and being happy looks very overdone at certain places. People are not this happy in real life on seeing their relatives to be honest. The flaws are only one or two, but they are so major that they threaten to ruin the entire film, which would have happened had it not been for great performances and amazing visuals.
What to do
In the end Brahmotsavam is strictly a one time watch and mostly for Mahesh Babu fans. It is a decent ride that will leave you a little unsatisfied towards the end. But kudos to Srikanth Addala for trying to do something different.
