Akshay Kumar is doing his best to be the most socially conscious star in Bollywood, what with his various social initiatives. His Bharat Ke Veer Jawan app has won him a lot of brownie points for his active help in helping the families of the martyred soldiers. He also posts videos on Twitter where he shares his thoughts on various incidents that are happening in the country. Even his movies these days, like his last release, Jolly LLB 2, or his upcoming movies like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Pad Man and Gold, are all socially conscious films. Now his fans call him the most patriotic actor in Bollywood, even comparing him to Manoj Kumar.
So living up to his new socially responsible image, Akshay Kumar had recently gone to Lords, England to see the final match of Women’s World Cup Cricket, to support the Indian team. However, sadly, we lost the match and Akshay Kumar got into a spot of bother too. There were pictures of him waving the Indian flag from the stands upside down, and many people on Twitter have criticised the actor for not respecting the flag, some of them even bringing his Canadian nationality into the discussion. Akshay Kumar pulled down those pictures from his social networking sites and apologised for this oversight.
During a special media interaction to promote Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Akshay Kumar was again asked about this. To which he replied, “What happened is, I was unfurling the flag and at the time I noticed it was upside down. While I was trying to steady it, someone clicked a photo from behind and even I did not notice it. But if someone’s sentiments are hurt, I seek an apology.”
Quite an agreeable excuse, we agree, though we do like to question why he posted that particular picture on Facebook and Twitter if it was taken accidentally. But mistakes do happen, and Akshay Kumar has apologised for it, so let’s all forget that and get on with our lives.
Coming to Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, the movie is directed by Shree Narayan Singh and also stars Bhumi Pednekar as the female lead. The movie is scheduled to release on August 11.
