Oscars 2016: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Christian Bale – who will take away the most desired statuette this year?

The award ceremony will be held on 28 February 2016…so warm your seats for then!

The 88th Academy Awards is going to an event to watch out for!

Why? Not because it happens to be the most watched show on the planet…Not because, Leonardo DiCaprio might have a chance to end the trolls this time and take the statue for himself…but because it is already suffering from the racial diversity row, and it is going to be hosted by Chris Rock, and he is definitely going to use that in his gags!

Apart from that, we have a feeling that this year’s Oscars will be quite predictable, seeing that they have overlooked several important and deserving performances for the shortlist (Michael Keaton for Spotlight, Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation, Michael B Jordan for Creed….seriously, you should have forgiven the kid for acting in the terrible Fantastic Four reboot by now!)

Anyways, these are my predictions for the top acting and film awards of the year.

BEST PICTURE

Nominees: The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room, Spotlight

Who will win:  The Revenant

Going by how so jury members are literally licking Alejandro Inarritu’s hands, we really feel this is going to be his year again. The Revenant is beautifully picturised, brutal tale of man against wild, and is certainly a top runner. Unless a certain Mad Max derails it off the road.

My personal pick: Spotlight

This film deserves more accolades than it had got. It is easily one of the most fantastic films I have seen last, year, thanks to its arresting narrative and terrific performances. But then, jury had ignored a much better Boyhood for the divisive Birdman last year!

BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Nominees: Bryan Cranston, Trumbo; Matt Damon, The Martian; Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant; Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs; Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

Who will win: Leonardo DiCaprio (Unless the Academy Award jury like to troll us and award it to Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl)

Come on, man! It’s high time that we give Leo what’s due to him. He should have gotten it way back when he was first nominated for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? as the Best Supporting Actor. We don’t say that he should have gotten it for Wolf of Wall Street in 2014 (Matthew McConaughey deserved it for Dallas Buyer’s Club, though Chiwetel Ejiofor’s performance in 12 Years A Slave was far more deserving). But his best performance ever that could have given him the trophy (the Departed) was never nominated. This year, he is most likely to trump all odds to be the ultimate winner, but his victory won’t be a great deal, since the competition isn’t too strong. Bryan Cranston was good in Trumbo but was not too impactful, and same goes to Michael Fassbender in Steve Jobs. Matt Damon’s likeable performance in The Martian is too mainstream, and Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl is too Oscar baity! So this should be Leo’s year, unless the jury pulls the rug from under our feet…After all, the man did eat raw bison liver to be true to his role, despite being a vegetarian!

My personal pick: Michael Fassbender

Though I am rooting for Leo, I cannot deny that Michael Fassbender was a far better performer in Steve Jobs! As for Leo getting ditched at the previous functions, even Michael has been given a very raw deal there, as some of his far better work never getting any recognition!

BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

Nominees: Cate Blanchett, Carol; Brie Larson, Room; Jennifer Lawrence, Joy; Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years; Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

Who will win: Brie Larson (Room)

Unlike the previous category, this is a very competitive one, because 2015 has been the year when Venus ruled over Mars. While I still lament Charlize thero was not nominated for her stellar act in Mad Max: Fury Road (why jury…the bloody hell, why?), I will be glad if the supremely talented Brie Larson get the award for her role as a protective mother who has been holed up in a room with her son for more than five years, only to find out that the outside world is not so easy to adjust, once freed.

My personal pick: Saoirse Ronan

If you have seen and fallen in love with Brooklyn, it’s all thanks to that wonderful actress and lovely actress, they call Saoirse Ronan. Like the changing landscapes in the film, even the range of her performance in the film has to be seen to be believed.

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Nominees: Christian Bale, The Big Short; Tom Hardy, The Revenant; Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight; Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies; Sylvester Stallone, Creed

Bridgeof-Spies-777x437

Who will win: Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies

Even if Steven Spielberg won’t win the Best Film and the Best Direction this year, thanks to much stronger contenders, there is chance that it won’t go empty-handed. Mark Rylance, who bowled us over as the sad-faced spy in the gripping drama, is definitely the frontrunner for the award, though I can also these two can also have a big chance to screw Mark’s chances…

My personal pick: Mark Ruffalo or Sylvester Stallone

Mark Ruffalo, because he was simply stunning as the determined journalist in Spotlight; Sylvester Stallone, simply  because we love him and he really was wonderful as the ageing, worn out retired boxer!

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Nominees: Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight; Rooney Mara, Carol; Rachel McAdams, Spotlight; Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl; Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

115100-full

Who will win: Rooney Mara (Carol)

It’s strange that Rooney Mara is nominated as the supporting actress, because she is one of the main leads of the film, but still she deserved to win the big trophy here. She has even overshadowed her far more senior co-star (Cate Blanchett) in this biographical period lesbian love story. The only HUGE competition she might have will be…

My personal pick: Alicia Vikander

She is nominated for the wrong film, and that will definitely go against her. It should have been for Ex Machina, where she delivers a flawless performance as the robot who tries to be in touch of the humanity within her. Her performance in The Danish Girl is also strong, but a nomination in Ex Machina would have knocked it out of the park

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

Nominees: Anomalisa, Boy and the World, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep Movie, When Marnie Was There

107279-full

Who will win: Inside Out

This has been a favourite of everyone, be it the masses, the classes and the critics. So Inside Out not winning the Academy Award will be a huge dampener. Especially, since it’s competitors are not so well received except for…

My personal pick: Anomalisa

The only issue that goes against this Charlie Kaufman-directed animation film, is that its serves a more adult audience, and not universal. Otherwise, this would have certainly won the race hands down!

BEST DIRECTION

Nominees: Adam McKay (The Big Short), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant), Lenny Abrahamson (Room), Tom McCarthy (Spotlight)

inarritu

Who will win: Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant)

This man has been a favourite of the jury, and this year too, he is mostl likely to steal the gold! It is to his credit that the Revenant turns more than just Leo’s salvo for the Oscars, and a riveting experience that must be seen in the theatres, to get the feel!

My personal pick: George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road)

Fine, don’t give the film the gold, but 80-year old George Miller definitely deserves an award for giving us the most visceral action entertainer in years! The film puts action to another level, and showed film-makers that there are levels still to be explored even in action films! And, and who can forget about those brilliant production values and stunning technical aspects?
