It’s a really a bad time for women-centric movies at the box office in 2017. We had quite a few movies where women took the centre-stage and yet despite the wave of women empowerment around us, these movies failed to make the right kind of mark at the box office counters. We had Vidya Balan’s Begum Jaan, Anushka Sharma’s Phillauri, Kangana Ranaut’s Rangoon, Swara Bhaskar’s Anarkali of Aarrah, Manjari Fadnis’s Jeena Isi ka Naam Hai, and Taapsee Pannu’s Naam Shabana all tanking at the box office. The latest victims being Sonakshi Sinha’s Noor and Raveena Tandon’s Maatr, that didn’t work at the box office. Interestingly, women-empowerment movies in recent times have worked well at the box office if it had a major male star in lead like Dear Zindagi (Shah Rukh Khan), Dangal (Aamir Khan) and Badrinath Ki Dulhania (Varun Dhawan). What a paradox!
Anyway, we can still hope the best for women-centric movies in the future, as this year itself we have five more movies where the ladies take the centre-stage.
Haseena: The Queen of Mumbai
Shraddha Kapoor plays infamous don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister, Haseena Parkar in this biopic, that is directed by Shootout at Lokhandwala fame Apoorva Lakhia. Her look in the movie has been quite a topic of discussion. Interestingly, her brother, Sidhanth is also playing her reel brother, Dawood in the movie.
Mom
Sridevi’s second movie after her comeback looks promising. We don’t know how similar will it be to Maatr, since both deal with angry moms. However, Mom has an interesting supporting cast in Akshaye Khanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and music by AR Rahman. Yeah, you have all our attention here.
Simran
Kangana Ranaut might have a misfire this year with Rangoon, but all she needs is one movie to get back on the track. And that movie might turn out to be Simran, her first movie with Hansal Mehta, acclaimed director of Shahid and Aligarh. Though we are still not sure the genre of the movie, it will be based in the US and is scheduled to release on September 15.
Tumhari Sulu
Another actress who may want to have that shot at redemption after the disastrous Rangoon. Vidya Balan will be playing an RJ in the movie, that directed by Suresh Triveni and is scheduled to release on December 1.
Padmavati
Let’s assume that we go by the makers’ promise that Padmavati will release this year, despite the various disruptions to the shooting schedule. Deepika Padukone plays the Queen Padmini, whose legendary beauty had the Delhi emperor so obsessed with it, that kingdoms got destroyed in the process.
Wishing all the best for the above 5 movies to rock the screens and give confidence to financiers to invest in more such ventures.
