Varun Dhawan’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania fails to beat Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees, becomes the third highest opener of 2017

Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt‘s Badrinath Ki Dulhania released on March 10 and looks like it has taken the box office by storm. The movie has managed to earn Rs 12.25 crore on day 1, making it the biggest opener for Varun-Alia’s jodi. However, Badrinath Ki Dulhania failed to beat the opening day collections of Shah Rukh Khan‘s Raees (Rs 20.42 crore) and Akshay Kumar‘s Jolly LLB 2 (Rs 13.20 crore). This means that the movie is now the third highest opener of 2017, which is a fantastic achievement. But with a bigger screen space and with no competition, we feel Badrinath Ki Dulhania could have beaten either of these two films. Talking about Badrinath Ki Dulhania‘s success, the movie obviously benefitted from the franchise factor, Varun-Alia’s pairing and the hit songs. But it was the storyline and performances that helped the movie get good reviews from the critics as well as the public. All these factors put together helped the movie get a fantastic start at the box office and helping it to make it into the top 5 biggest openers of 2017. Check out the list right here:

The positive word of mouth publicity will obviously help the movie grow over the weekend and sustain through the first week. With such a good start, we expect Badrinath Ki Dulhania to collect anywhere between Rs 45-50 crore at the end of the first weekend. As our trade expert – Amul Vikas Mohan (Editor of Super Cinema) had revealed to us earlier, “In an ideal scenario, after collecting Rs 13 crore on Friday, the movie could collect Rs 15 crore on Saturday and Rs 17 crore on Sunday. This would mean, Badrinath Ki Dulhania would have a first weekend collection of Rs 45 crore.” ALSO READ – Badrinath Ki Dulhania tweet review: Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt get all the love from fans

With this, Badrinath Ki Dulhania will also be able to break into the top 5 highest opening weekend grossers of 2017. In fact, it will also give Jolly LLB 2‘s weekend collections a run for its money.
