Kangana Ranaut celebrates her 29th birthday today!

If I say Kangana Ranaut is one of the best actresses we have in Bollywood today, I won’t be too far from the truth. After all, how many Bollywood actresses can claim of winning the National Award twice, that too in mainstream films?

Very, very few will be the answer, and Kangana falls under this elite list. She has won the National award twice, first for the Best Supporting actress for Fashion (Priyanka also got her first National Award in the same film), and later the Best Actress for Queen. Sure, she had her share of missteps (Double Dhamaal, Shakalaka Boom Boom, Rascals, No Problem), but in her better movies, she is a class apart! If the director allows her room to improve and not just act as a bimbette, then presto! you might be having a quality film in your kitty!

Shonali in Fashion

As the drug-addicted supermodel, whose career goes down the drain following a wardrobe malfunction on the ramp, Kangana is stellar in her first national award winning role. Her scene with Priyanka Chopra near the end of the film is heart-wrenching, and you can’t leave the theatres, with dry eyes, after knowing about her death scene!

Rani Mehra in Queen

In this bitter-sweet slice of life story about a girl who goes on a honeymoon in Paris all alone, because her fiance ditched her, Kangana won her second national Award. She was believable as the girl who discovers the real meaning of life and not needing to depend on anyone, through the various people she meets on the way!

She is especially brilliant, when she lets out her inhibitions and dance crazily, or when she drunkenly reveals her life story to some strangers…

Tanu/Datto in Tanu Weds Manu (and its sequel)

To be honest, I like the original film much better than the sequel (which I feel was very confused…but hey! that’s my opinion). Though R Madhavan was brilliant as the hero of the film, it solely belonged to Kangana Ranaut who stole the show with her wild child act! Also, the one thing the sequel did right was her nearly unbelievable transformation as the tomboyish Haryanvi Datto! Now that was an award -worthy performance!

Simran in Gangster

It’s here where her reign started! The Anurag Basu film had Shiney Ahuja and Emraan hashmi as the lead actors, but it was Kangana’s troubled gangster’s moll that made the biggest impression. Although this is the kind of role she will later get typecast into, her first performance was definitely the one worth remembering!

Woh Lamhe

This may be one of her most underrated films, but it is easily one of the best in her career. Mohit Suri takes on the Mahesh Bhatt – Parveen Babi – Kabir Bedi love triangle and makes it more contemporary, giving us a tragic love story, that deserves more love than what it actually got. Kangana especially was fantastic as the actress, who found tragic consequences in every turn of her personal life, till Fate decided to cut it short for her!

On behalf of Bollywoodlife, we wish the actress a very Happy Birthday!
