The Tamil film industry is currently facing a crisis as the government has issued an additional 30% tax in addition to the Good and service tax amounting the tax to now a whopping 58%. In response to this move by the government, at least 1000 theatres in Tamil Nadu have shut down indefinitely, stating they would be back in action only if the government would hear them and consider their specific pleas. The latest star to react to this current situation is none other Tamil superstar Rajinikanth. He has urged to government to consider their plea as lot of people’s livelihood depends on this. He has taken to social media to bring this matter up. It was only yesterday, Kamal Haasan was blasting the TN government for making film making deliberately difficult in this state. “Our neighbouring states like Kerala have totally desisted from levying anymore state-tax on cinema over and above GST. The film industry requested the CM of Kerala Mr Pinarayi Vijayan and he through his Finance Minister quickly announced that Kerala will not be levying any more taxes on the already beleaguered film business. Karnataka has gone even further to facilitate the well-being of the film Industry. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are also doing their best for their film industries.” Also Read: GST EFFECT! t is only the Tamil Nadu government that has brought the tax to 30 per cent. Filmmaking is deliberately being made difficult in our state. Ironical that this should happen in a state whose chief minister until very recently was a former actress.”
Before this, 2.0 director Shankar reacted to the exorbitant tax and urged people to save Tamil cinema. Madan Karky, a lyricist has announce the would reduce his remuneration by 15% until the matter was resolved.
Vikram Vedha starring R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi was to release this week but it has now been postponed owing to the double taxation.
