So which film in the first quarter of 2016 made the most impact on you?
The first quarter of 2016 is nearing its end, and as is usual every year, good stuff is hard to come by when it comes to Bollywood! With nearly 30 films releasing in the marquee this year, majority of them turned out to be the ones you neither heard of, or would rather forget!
So there were films like Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3 or Mastizaade which took the comedy and sex out of sex comedies, Wazir and Teraa Suroor that turn thrillers into snooze-fest, and action flicks like Rocky Handsome barely managing a proper punch.
However there have been some good movies, something you can count on your fingers of your hand, that definitely left an indelible impression in your hearts! And due to the paucity of such good stuff, you also know which movies I am talking about…
So as the first quarter of 2016 ends, here are the four movies that we feel have saved the reputation of Bollywood this year!
Airlift
The real-life evacuation drama, based on an event that happened during the infamous Gulf War, had some really thrilling moments, but is, above all, a victory of human spirit. Akshay Kumar maintains his winning streak with the film, as he sensibly handles both mainstream and multiplex sensibilities with ease.
Pros: Effective plot, some heart-touching human drama, thrilling moments, Akshay’s performance
Cons: A couple of forced jingoistic scenes, and unnecessary songs
Neerja
Based on the life and demise of braveheart Pan Am air hostess, Neerja Bhanot, the film tells the story of the final moments of Neerja’s life as her plane is hijacked by merciless terrorists, and how she gave up her life for people she barely knew.
Pros: Excellent performances by Shabana Azmi, Sonam kapoor and everyone in the cast, claustrophobic but well-shot hijacking scenes, the final speech of neerja’s mother
Cons: Nothing much, except for a few cinematic liberties.
Aligarh
A gritty tale of how a professor in Aligarh university was humiliated and thrown away from his job, due to his sexual orientation. The film brilliantly showcases his struggles to gain his job and honour back legally, as the world around him is hell bent to despise him more!
Pros: Manoj Bajpai’s award-worthy performance ably supported by Rajkummar Rao, Deft direction
Cons: The film can move very slow at times
Kapoor & Sons
The Kapoor grandson come together at their family house in Coonoor after a gap of five years, to meet their hospitalised grandad! However, as the family gets together under one roof, hidden anger, jealousies and skeletons spill out of the closet, threatening to break their very base!
Pros: A very engaging family drama that will touch you where it should, great performances from everyone, especially Fawad Khan and Ratna Pathak Shah, naturalistic shot family scenes.
Cons: Predictable plot, also Alia and Sid’s characters look shortchanged.
So which of these films were your fave? Vote and let us know…
